Your Baby's First Visit

Most newborns are seen within the first week of life.

During this visit, we take a gentle, thorough approach. We’ll check your baby’s growth, talk through feeding and sleep, and make sure you feel comfortable with what’s happening at home.

You’ll have time to ask questions, talk through concerns, and get clear, thoughtful answers.

What we’ll cover:

  • Weight, height, and head circumference
  • Feeding patterns and diaper output
  • Sleep and daily rhythms
  • Any early concerns or questions

If your baby needs to be seen sooner, we do our best to offer flexible scheduling, including same-day visits when possible.

As Your Baby grows, We’re Right Here with You

NEXT STEPS

Your next visit is usually around 2 weeks. We’ll continue monitoring growth and complete important newborn screenings.

LOOKING AHEAD

Over the first few months, we’ll guide you through feeding changes, developmental milestones, and what to expect at each stage.

Ongoing Support

Questions come up in between visits, and that’s completely normal. Our team is here to help you think things through and feel more confident along the way.

Resources Every New Parent Should Have

In those early weeks, it helps to have a few reliable references you can glance at quickly. These are the same resources many of our families keep saved on their phones or printed at home.

Each resource is available within the PDFs below, making it easy to view, save, or dowload whenever you need it.

Meet Doctor Van

Dr. Suzanne Van Benthuysen, known to many families as Dr. Van, brings a thoughtful and deeply personal approach to newborn care. After becoming a mother herself, she developed a passion for helping families navigate feeding, early development, and the many questions that come with a new baby.

As a board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), Dr. Van offers hands-on breastfeeding support during your visits. Whether you’re working through latch issues, milk supply concerns, or just need reassurance that things are going well, she meets you where you are with practical, compassionate guidance.

Families often tell us that having this level of support built into their pediatric care makes all the difference in those early weeks.

Answers to our Most Commonly asked questions

How soon should my baby be seen?

Most newborns are seen within the first week of life. If there are any concerns, we may recommend coming in sooner.

Yes. Breastfeeding support is part of what we do. Dr. Van is a certified lactation consultant and offers hands-on guidance during visits.

What should I bring to the first visit?

We’ll guide you ahead of time, but generally anything related to feeding, paperwork from the hospital, and your questions.

What if I’m not sure things are going well?

That’s more common than you might think. We’re here to talk through anything that feels uncertain, whether it’s feeding, sleep, or something that just doesn’t feel right.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

When possible, yes. We do our best to accommodate newborn needs quickly.
